PhD students create academic journal dedicated to leadership in higher education

The new Open Educational Resources (OER) journal from the University of Colorado Denver, Cases of Leadership for Equity and Justice in Higher Education (CLEJHE), is a peer-reviewed academic journal (Denver, Colorado) dedicated to the rapid dissemination of case studies related to leadership in higher education. It is governed by an editorial board and peer review team of doctoral students, and an oversight committee of faculty at CU Denver. School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) Leadership for Education Equity-Higher Education EdD Program. The journal is made available through a Creative Commons license to support greater global knowledge sharing in higher education.

The production of Volume 1 of the magazine was carried out quickly and successfully, even during the pandemic. The current editorial board consists of higher education doctoral students, including Dan Lawrence, Jacquelyn Ray, and Brian DeLevie, also an associate professor at CU Denver’s Faculty of Arts and Media They have set themselves the goal of publishing the magazine every six months. The team enjoyed the shared leadership model of the magazine. It helped bring together students and faculty from multiple cohorts of the doctoral program as authors, reviewers, advisors, and editors. “Serving as editors has given us a unique vantage point on the current issues and challenges facing our field,” said Dan Lawrence, Director of Library Services at Community College of Aurora. “It has been an honor to work on an open access publication that has the potential to further the use of equity-focused cases in higher education leadership studies.”
