Los Angeles Department of Education names 2022 Students of the Year

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Three 2022 Students of the Year were honored at a ceremony hosted by the Louisiana Department of Education on Wednesday night.

Twenty-one regional finalists were also honored during the ceremony.

LDOE Announced Students of the Year:

Elementary School (5th Grade) —Ellen Kate Semmes; daughter of Robert and Catherine Semmes. Ellen is a student at Kiroli Elementary School in Ouachita Parish, where Mrs. Carolyn Norris serves as Principal. Dr. Don Coker serves as Superintendent of Ouachita Parish Schools.

Middle School (8th grade) — Melissa An Le; Son and Van Le’s daughter. Melissa is a student at AE Phillips Laboratory School in Lincoln Parish, where Mrs. Jenny Blalock serves as Principal. Mr. Rickey Durrett serves as the Superintendent of the Lincoln Parish School System.

High School (Grade 12) —Anita Rose Zahiri; daughter of Monsour Zahiri and Mojgan Meamarian. Anita is a senior at Benjamin Franklin High School, where Dr. Patrick Widhalm serves as the school’s principal. Ms. Alea Cot serves as Board President for Advocates for Excellence in Education, Inc., the Benjamin Franklin High School Board of Directors, and Dr. Henderson Lewis serves as Superintendent of NOLA Public Schools.
