LVIV, Ukraine – The Russian Defense Ministry says the fire on the Moskva cruiser, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, has been contained. He says the ship remains afloat and will be towed to port.

The ministry said in a statement Thursday that there is no longer any open fire on the ship and ammunition explosions have stopped. “The main missile weapons were not damaged,” the statement read.

Ukrainian officials claimed, however, that the ship sank, saying it is a “resounding slap” for Moscow’s forces.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the Ukrainian president’s office, said in a Facebook post that 510 crew members were on board the Moskva cruise ship when it sank in the Black Sea, following heavy damage from a Ukrainian missile attack.

Military analyst Oleg Zhdanov said the damage to the Moskva significantly boosts the morale of Ukrainian forces on the eve of a new wave of Russian offensive in Donbas.

Early Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry said the ship suffered “serious damage” after its munitions detonated “as a result of a fire.” The ministry did not attribute the fire to a missile attack.
