Speaking to MailOnline, the now happily sober TV personality revealed that staff at a rehabilitation center were the first to identify her eating problems and tried to teach her coping strategies such as mindful eating.

“When I actually went to rehab for the first time, I went there initially for my drinking and drug issues or whatever, and after a few days they put me in the eating disorders unit,” James explained of his unexpected diagnosis.

James said he continued with the techniques he was taught, revealing: “They tried to teach me to eat mindfully instead of pushing it down, put your phone away, relax, chew your food many times, let the food last 20 minutes.” Don’t rush your food, so that’s what I’m trying to do now.

“For me, when I got off the drinking and drugs that led me back to food, it can be a vicious cycle.”

James also revealed to MailOnline that he has yet to be mindful of his diet, despite having the gastric band fitted.

“In fact, I’m still hungry, people think you’re still hungry, but I am,” he said. “I just have to be careful not to pop it in too fast or take too big bites, I need to eat, they say it’s 20/20/20, so you have 20p sized food on your fork, 20 chews and then you wait 20 seconds until you go again.’

‘And I’ll be honest with you, I can’t do much in one sitting, but I try to eat little and often to embarrass my friends. Basically, whoever I go out to dinner with, I embarrass them because I go to dinner, I order what I feel like or want.’
