Multiple viruses affect the airways and cause respiratory symptoms. Sneezing, coughing and coughing,” said Dr. María Serrano, an Animal Services veterinarian.

Animal Services said many cases of CIRDC have been reported throughout South Florida. They urge dog owners to help protect their pets by keeping them up to date on routine vaccinations and away from multi-dog settings.

“Stay away from places that have conglomerate dogs. Dog parks, groomers, any place where many dogs are together. Also, avoid nose-to-nose contact between dogs,” Serrano said.

To protect the pets in your shelter, Animal Services is temporarily suspending the following services for your dogs until further notice.

  • Wellness Clinic: spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchips
  • Reception – Delivery of the owner
  • Off-Site Pet Adoption Events

The virus is spread by direct contact with an infected dog and by contact with people who have been exposed to the virus. The virus can be carried on clothing, hands, and items such as food/water bowls, collars/leashes, toys, and bedding.
